How to take care of Kidneys!

Kidney Care

"Taking care of your kidneys is about protecting their filtering function, preventing damage, and reducing strain so they can last a lifetime. This guide covers lifestyle, diet, and medical monitoring — useful for both healthy individuals and those at risk".

1. Understand Your Kidneys Role

When they are damaged, waste products build up, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) or even kidney failure.

2. Core Principles of Kidney Care

A. Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure

Target: <120/80 mmHg (or as advised by your doctor).

Why: High BP is the second most common cause of kidney damage after diabetes.

How:

  • Limit salt to <5g/day (about 1 tsp).
  • Avoid processed/packaged foods high in sodium.
  • Exercise 30 min daily (walking, swimming, cycling).
  • Manage stress through yoga, meditation, or breathing exercises.
B. Control Blood Sugar

Why: Diabetes is the leading cause of CKD.

How:

  • Get fasting & post-meal sugar tested regularly if at risk.
  • Eat whole grains, high-fiber vegetables, avoid refined carbs.
  • Keep HbA1c < 6.0 (for diabetics, as per doctor’s advice).
C. Stay Hydrated — but Smartly
  • General: 2–2.5 liters water/day for healthy adults (adjust for climate & activity).
  • Don’t overdrink: Excess water doesn’t “flush” kidneys — it can strain them if you have heart or kidney disease.
  • Caution: People with kidney or heart problems may need fluid restriction — Consult Dr. Devikumar Kelkar Nephrologist From Nashik

3. Warning Signs of Kidney Trouble

  • Swelling of face, hands, or feet.
  • Persistent fatigue or weakness.
  • Foamy or bloody urine.
  • Frequent urination at night.
  • Sudden blood pressure rise.
  • Reduced urine output.
  • Loss Of Appetite

4. Kidney Care Quick Checklist

  • Limit salt & processed foods.
  • Keep blood pressure & blood sugar in range.
  • Stay moderately active.
  • Avoid unnecessary painkillers.
  • Drink adequate water (not too little, not too much).
  • Monitor kidney function yearly if at risk.
  • Maintain healthy weight.
